Vitalik Buterin Applauds Soneium for Its Transparent Showcase of L2 Capabilities

Jan 23rd 2025

Vitalik Buterin hailed the Soneium L2 launch as an example of meeting user and corporate requirements. A business-grade L2 remains traceable and transparent in conflict situations.

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin hailed Sony's Soneium debut to illustrate how to implement a business-grade L2. Buterin clarified in an X post that a company can decide how much power to retain or grant users with the help of current L2 technology. Buterin attempted to elucidate whether censorship was an issue for the entire ecosystem or if L2 activities were mirrored on Ethereum.

Soneium became one of more than 127 L2 chains, each with its own culture and application. Even though introducing tokens violates intellectual property rights, the token censoring measures set a precedent not seen in other chains.

Buterin's comment violated his rule that if L2 chains are not at least at Stage 1 of decentralization by 2025, they should not be mentioned. Soneium, a project in the Optimism super chain, is still in Stage 0. The new chain is undergoing the necessary modifications to transition to Stage 2 with completely decentralized security. Buterin has previously stated that only Arbitrum and Optimism are Stage 1 chains as of January 2025.

A day after Soneium announced its plan to block tokens that infringe upon intellectual property rights, Buterin's post was published. Soneium stops the transaction by freezing the tokens using its centralized sequencer.

The acts are transparent and subject to analysis by L2 data platforms, even if the corporate chain chooses to manage tokens. Buterin thinks that as long as users are aware of the on-chain constraints, flow control of some kind is feasible. Regarding corporate chains, the completely censorship-free flow of money and assets might begin to resemble the terms and conditions of using web apps.

Soneium Team Unveils Guidelines for Meme Token Creation

In a blog post following the two token-freezing events, Soneium outlined its stance on intellectual property infringement. The L2 team will have a 12-hour grace time to alert the team and the community before freezing tokens. Meanwhile, the meme assets will be included in seven dubious token addresses.

After reaching compliance, developers can challenge the blocklisting and resume using their smart contract. A core-member Soneium committee will review the appeals.

Sony's brands are chosen by some of the new coins introduced on DYOR DEX. WALKMAN, one of the frozen tokens, caused all transactions to halt on January 14. The early adopters also introduced the KURO, Crash Bandicoot, AstroBot, PlayStation 1, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 2 memes.

Soneium goes live – and starts to build up value.

With widespread access, the Soneium mainnet is operational and is now beginning to gain more activity and value. Following the debut, the team reaffirmed its commitment to upholding creative rights, including restricting names and images by meme tokens.

With minimal rent paid to Ethereum thus far, Soneium has also entered the blob economy. The total fees for the chain's first day were less than $500. However, the L2 eventually shifted between call data and blobs.

Attempts to get around token censorship are one of the causes of call data use. Because Soneium is an optimistic roll-up, users can completely circumvent censorship by paying more to force their transactions onto Ethereum. Nevertheless, the workaround might not be appropriate for many users and necessitates a deeper technical understanding of Ethereum's environment.

Although Soneium declines to process the transaction on L2, the ability to transmit transactions directly to Ethereum implies that the tokens themselves are neither censored nor frozen. The procedure is transparent but inconvenient, as Buterin indicated.
